DIRECTION by Indigo
I’m pleased to announce that Velveteen Prints will be exhibiting at DIRECTION by Indigo next week!
The Autumn / Winter 2012 / 2013 collection is designed specifically for the fashion-forward women’s and juniors markets. Everything is printed on beautiful 100% silk, and all prints are available in digital format. As always, there is an emphasis on print-ability — no more than 12 colors maximum per design, and many of the prints are in repeat.
If you will be attending the show, please stop by to introduce yourself and check out the collection. I recommend making an appointment — click here to email me (quinn@velveteenprints.com) with your preferred date and time.
Here is the show information:

Printsource – April 12 & 13th 2011
It’s that time again! Printsource New York is next week in NYC. If you have any interest at all in fashion, textile / print / color trends, this is definitely a resource you should check out. Bring a business card with you to register at the door — the event is free, and open to the trade and press. I’ll be at Booth D15 with a bunch of awesome new prints. Come say hi!
Swash
I was just browsing new additions to SVPPLY (here’s mine) when I came across an awesome Swash shirt that Beklina had added from their online shop. Swash is Sarah Swash and Toshio Yamanaka, designers from England & Japan, and their Spring/Summer 2011 collection is a wonderland of fantastically illustrated animals and musical instruments.
SUPERMOON!
On March 19th, Earthlings peeped a perigee-syzygy, a.k.a SUPERMOON! The full moon was closer to the Earth than it has been for 18 years, which, according to largely mystical and un-scientific sources, can lead to fantastic occurrences on our planet. Is it any wonder, then, that the moon had such a powerful influence on several designers for their Fall / Winter 2011 collections? I think not!

FOXY!
Opening Ceremony posted about their newest collaboration with Deyrolle taxidermy shop in Paris, and I love it! Here are a couple shots from the OC Blog (taken in the Deyrolle shop) and some scarves they collaborated on for FNO ’10.
In other news, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen threw a party for their new denim line, Textile Elizabeth & James, and Ashley showed up in a foxy sweater herself.
In other, other news, I have a cat named Fox. She looks like a fox. Check out her tumblr.

Lala Berlin

Style.com posted a “Dispatch from Berlin” yesterday, featuring two images from Leyla Piedayesh’s Lala Berlin Fall 2011 RTW collection (above). Apparently, this collection was inspired by “children’s arts and crafts,” but since I cannot read German, I had a difficult time finding out more information about this! I used Google Translate on the Nahtlos! blog post about this collection, which yielded the following result:
Leyla Piedayesh seems to want to Outsmarting the gray winter blues, because their new collection for autumn / winter 2011/2012 was some pretty colorful so.
Outsmarting the gray winter blues! Pretty colorful so! Couldn’t have put it better myself!
Anyway, those two photos kept me searching for more images of the collection, which combines really bright neon yellow and green with more mossy tones, and lots of gray and black. Sleek Magazine has photos of the full collection — check it out!

I’m trying to see how this is inspired by children’s crafts. Maybe the children are the offspring of LSD researchers.

I love these woodsy prints. They remind me of lichen / moss, especially in these colors.

70s: Opening Night
Word on the street (and in the blogs, and in the magazines, and in the stores…) is that the 70s are back in a big way. You can see it everywhere, from Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2011 show to the wide-leg trousers for sale at the Gap. There are so many ways to do a 70s look, from flowery dresses and floppy hats to oversized sunglasses and halter top pantsuits. I’d like to take a moment to celebrate one of my favorite 70s looks, which is that of the sophisticated and casually tailored style of a lady on the verge of a psychotic break. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you some stills from the completely awesome film “Opening Night,” directed by John Cassavetes and starring the inimitable Gena Rowlands.

The sunglasses, the coral pink lips, and the huge shaggy fur are straight outta 2011.

I wonder if all the “fashion people wearing jackets like capes” got their inspiration from this movie… The actual cape is bangin too; she’s like a fancy, alcoholic Druid.

I love this bright coral color. I don’t know if she’s wearing a dress or an elaborate pajama ensemble, but it works. The painted floral top is very Stella McCartney Resort 2011.
The Druid returns to her lair.

PRINTSOURCE: what the people want
Last week, the tri-annual Printsource trade show took place on the beautiful, snowy isle of Manhattan. This was my first time exhibiting with Velveteen Prints, and I was overwhelmed by the wonderful feedback I received about the new collection. I thought I’d do the blog world a service and report on what types of prints the buyers were looking for this season.
Although there were plenty of people who asked flat out to see the florals, which never go out of style, most passers-by were drawn in to my booth by the textural / painterly prints on display. These were prints that I had done by hand initially, using acrylic paint, watercolors, or dyes, to create a smeared, artist’s-studio-floor kind of look. I think this type of print is popular because it’s so versatile. With the right colors and styling, it can be pretty and soft, or dirty and grunge.
Besides the painterly prints, my “voyager” prints were another huge draw. Voyager is just my PC term for “ethnic” / “tribal” prints — my academic background in Art History won’t let me use those terms with a clear conscience! The voyager prints are inspired by the trends sweeping the runways and street fashion recently, from Pendleton blankets to Missoni’s wacked out Spring 2011 collection, but done in an accessible, juniors-friendly palette featuring bright coral and soft pink.
Oh, and they’re still asking for camo!
♑ what would capricorn wear? ♑

happy birthday, capricorn! you’re a sea goat!
just like a sea goat, you’re ambitious, dignified, hard-working, and practical. since you’re also an earth sign, i’m going to guess you’re drawn to a classic, almost woodsy style — what they’re calling “heritage” these days. i’m thinking riding boots and cable knit cashmere sweaters. traditional and earthy, but not hippie. no, you like to keep a steady head on your shoulders. here, i pulled this ensemble together just for you:
steven alan blazer, vp208 tank top, vince leggings, tenoversix wedges
yeah, it’s a little more edgy than what you might be used to, but live it up a little! get out of your comfort zone, you old sea goat. check out those wooden cut-out wedges. hot, right? i can just see you kicking those off before relaxing by the fire in that old money ski lodge you love so much — that is, if you ever let yourself take a vacation. don’t worry, the blazer keeps you looking presentable in case you run into a potential business partner at dinner.
now go, have a great year! and if you need more advice, you can always consult the expert.
